Yes. Luma starts at complete beginner (A1): she greets you in Catalan, keeps most of the conversation in your own language at first and moves more of it into Catalan as you go. Coach suggestions stay on for beginners, so you always know what you could say next, and the first lessons cover greetings, numbers and everyday phrases.
No — it's its own language, with around ten million speakers across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearics, Andorra and a corner of southern France. It grew from Latin alongside Spanish, French and Italian rather than out of any of them, which is why it has sounds and little words, like the pronoun en, that Spanish simply doesn't have.
As you talk, in the transcript. A slip like "sí, vull" is highlighted with the fix beside it, "sí, en vull", and a Why? that explains it in a line. The conversation keeps going. Your slips then come back as quick drills, so the fix sticks.
You don't need Spanish, though it does give you a head start on the vocabulary. Luma speaks standard central Catalan, the one you'll hear in Barcelona and on TV3. Valencian and Balearic aren't separate options in the app, and she won't pretend otherwise — but central Catalan is understood everywhere Catalan is spoken.
